La Memoria de Las Frutas (The Memory of Fruits)

Synopsis

Third Horizon Film Festival (THFF) is thrilled to collaborate with artist and filmmaker Claudia Claremi, with the support of the Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI) of Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), to present a series of video bumpers at THFF25. One bumper will screen before every program at the Festival, which runs from May 29–June 1 in Miami.

The three short bumpers form an extension of the Miami iteration of La memoria de las frutas (The Memory of Fruits), a large-scale, research-driven project by Claudia that explores the sensory and emotional connections people have with fruits.

The prompt for the project came in 2015, while Claudia, born in Spain, was living in her parents’ homeland of Cuba and traveled to Puerto Rico for an artist’s residency program. Since then, the project has gone on to include chapters in the Dominican Republic and Cuba, and also features members of the Caribbean diaspora in New York and Madrid.

In Miami, Claudia expanded the project with a focus on Caribbean diaspora communities there. Using black-and-white 16mm film and 35mm photography, she captured participants’ hands as they gesture and describe the fruits they remember, paired with text fragments from their oral testimonies.

These personal memories not only build a collection of dozens of fruit varieties but also shed light on a range of issues, including industrial agriculture, the migratory paths of both fruits and people, and the diminishing presence of fruit trees in yards and streets. The result is a compellingly tactile archive of fruits and memories, one that is at turns tender, playful, and surprising.

“It’s an honor to present my work at Third Horizon Film Festival alongside so many incredible Caribbean filmmakers,” says Claudia. “I’m also excited to share the results of La memoria de las frutas in Miami, the very place where it was filmed just a few months ago.”

She continues, “The complete project weaves a collective narrative about the structural causes of disconnection and forgetfulness, while restoring histories and honoring the fruits along the way.”

“We are delighted to be working with Claudia, and CCI PAMM to present La memoria de las frutas in this manifestation at THFF25,” says Jonathan Ali, Third Horizon’s Director of Programming. “Not only does the project as a whole encompass multiple Caribbean spaces, but this specific manifestation of it, coming out of Miami, beautifully reflects the diasporic community in the city that Third Horizon Film Festival calls home.”

La Memoria de las Frutas was filmed in Miami in 2024 with the support of Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Caribbean Cultural Institute and Women Photographers International Archive Fellowship, in collaboration with El Espacio 23.
